Opioids from the Internet: Almost All Online Pharmacies are Illegal

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 97 percent of online pharmacies operate illegally – both in the form of surface websites and the Darknet. The June 2018 report, The State of Opioid Sales on the Dark Web, prepared for CSIP by partner LegitScript, sheds light on the ongoing challenges of regulating the large scale operations of websites trying to sell opioids and other harmful medications to the public. The use of click-bait ads on social media sites can leader users astray and even put them at risk for credit card and identify theft.

A recent article in Newsweek highlighted CSIP’s new report and its range of resources to help consumers verify the safety of online pharmacies before making purchases, find ways to save money safely when shopping for medications, and help families access opioid prevention and addiction management tools (through MedicineSafe.org – collaboration with The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids).

CSIP Participates in FDA Opioid Summit

CSIP Opioid Awareness News

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) held an Opioid Summit on June 27, 2018. The purpose of the Summit was to invite “internet stakeholders, government entities, academic researchers, and advocacy groups to discuss ways to collaboratively take stronger action in combating the opioid crisis by reducing the availability of illicit opioids online.” CSIP director, Marjorie Clifton, participated in the Summit.
